FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an international non-profit organization that was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen. He believed that society needed to focus more on science and technology in order to progress, so he created this organization as a way to inspire young students to participate in STEM and to actively practice their leadership skills. Participating in FIRST is a gateway for young minds to challenge themselves and gain experiences for skills that will be helpful in the working industry. Currently, FIRST has four competitions that students K-12 are able to participate in. For students that are in kindergarten to fourth grade, they are able to compete in the FIRST LEGO League Jr. competition. For those that are in grades four to eight, they are able to participate in the FIRST LEGO League competition. For middle school and high school students, they are able to participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge and the FIRST Robotics Competition.
